They controlled Hermitage castle “the guardhouse of the bloodiest valley in Britain”. Today Elliots have settled across the globe but originally this famous family inhabited the Anglo-Scottish borders in a lawless area that become known as the Debatable Lands. Here clan and family loyalty was held above all other allegiances and the rule of law and power of Kings but a distant rumour.
